Exercise in
descriptive writing: A T R E E
(2nd Draft)
Philosophical
Interpretation.
The aspen tree that I am writing about seems
to be a very ordinary looking tree. It is not too tall and not very wide. But
there are certain things about it that make it different from all the other
trees in this forest. I chose this tree mainly because it represents a solid
character development needed by many people in this world.
For instance, the tree is alone. This is the
non-conformity needed to be a man and stand up against the masses. A bent trunk is the symbol of a shaky
character development or it could represent bewilderment in early
childhood. Soon, however, the crooked
tree trunk straightens out into a more solid character. As babies, men start
out confused, but with the right kind of guidance the same men slowly develop
into responsible human beings. This is what the person represented by my tree
is doing. Dead branches above the bent trunk are the sign of a better
developing personality with only a few flaws, because there is straight growth
now. However, there is a big black spot
at the end of the dead branches, which I think stands for rebellion. Perhaps it
could also be a sort of rite of transition. After rebellion there are only a
few branches grasping out for knowledge.
But at least they are alive. The adolescent child is losing his apathy
and is becoming more interested in life and wisdom. As the years progress,
branches grasping for wisdom become more and more numerous. When the man is about 20 years of age, the
tree splits and bends again. Perhaps he is confused and does not know which
branch to follow. He goes the wrong way and has to retrace his steps. The second bend in the tree symbolizes this
wrong move. This is the last
hard-learned lesson in his life, however. Of course, he sulks about it for a
while, but then he starts to reach out for knowledge again. At 30 he is now
stretching out his branches in all directions and he has been granted what
every man craves: wisdom, maturity, and freedom to grow toward the sun.
