Glossary

ACROPOLIS HILL - A rocky outcropping halfway up the hill where a permanent lean-to was constructed, the perfect secluded spot with a spectacular view.

BATTERY ACID – Hot Cocoa.

CENTRAL or CENTRAL SEWER - Central City, Colorado.

CHARLIE – Title character in the camp’s own ghost/monster story, about a young man, a miner of the 1890’s who went crazy when his friends were trapped in a mine cave-in. He’s big and mean and has one red eye and loves to steal and set off blasting caps.

CITYBOY – Term used for a camp member who has not been given their Mountain Man Name

CLANS: Each trip was given a Clan Name in order to distinguish it from any other trip.

GRANITE HOLE – name given to that particular hole one needs to dig to provide the necessary depository for human waste.

GRUMPY BEAR - A small bear (?) who lived on the far side of the mountain and would come into the area every now and then to steal goodies.  (Not sure if this is a legend or truth.)

HAWK CLIFF - A giant rock face that stood directly behind the camp. Named for a family of hawks that lived there when Lingo first purchased the mountain.

HOT TORPEDOS – Hot dogs.

LCM - Laughing Coyote Mountain.

LOOTENANT BEERBOTTLE: Lootenant Beerbottle was our camp director of discipline.  A  beerbottle tied up to a tree which the offending camper must salute and repeat their transgression for penance.

MOUNTAIN MAN: The moniker mountain man was given to those who attended the camp.  At first called Cityboys, during one of the nightly campfires a nickname was given to honor achievements, or talents.  Once a Cityboy has received his MOuntain Man name, he is always referred to by that name.

SAM & SADIE GOMOWITZ – Chipmunks who lived in/near the camp.

SLURRRRRRP:  Maple Syrup, for putting on pancakes

SOCRATES TRAIL – wide trail from main road to Base Camp.

THEREAU’S THROW – A large area of woods near the top of LCM in which all the trees were downed, as if someone had picked them up one at a time and thrown them down in different directions. Thereau stated that the best school would be a log with a student on one end and a teacher on the other.

THERMOPOLAE PASS – Narrow Trail from Base Camp to top of Hawk Cliff.

TITANIC ACID – Hot Brewed Tea, named for it's ingredient 'tanic acid' which helps remind us that it can be used to treat burns.
